Contrary to what you may think, scorpions are not an insect – they are actually an arachnid, like spiders. Scorpions are very common across the southwestern United States and, interestingly, most scorpions are not actually poisonous. The sting from their segmented tail is closer to a bee sting than anything else. However, there are two species of scorpions in the United States that are poisonous, so it is best to assume that any scorpion sting is a serious one.


While scorpions prefer to live outdoors, preferring habitats like deserts, grasslands, and savannahs, they can sometimes find their way into your home. Like other pests, scorpions may enter your home in search of food or shelter.
